In Quepos, the peak offshore season starts around the beginning of December and lasts well into April with sailfish plentiful along with occasional marlin, dorado, and tuna, but all are available year-round just in fewer numbers. Nearshore fishing is reliable all year for roosterfish, snapper, amberjack, grouper, etc. Like the rest of Costa Rica, October and November should be avoided because of unstable weather patterns.
Most charter boats in Quepos are geared to parties of four and are smaller than you are likely to find in the states ranging from 25′ to 33′ or so, with a couple in the 35′ – 41′ range. With calm seas, most of the year, the size of the boat that you want is more often decided by the number of anglers. Full-day charters include all bait, tackle, lunch & drinks, but not the fishing license, which you can get at the pier before leaving for the day’s fishing trip.
Quepos/Manuel Antonio is a major draw for tourists, not just anglers. Quepos is the town, and Manuel Antonio is in the national park, the most popular in the country, located about four miles away. Basically, the park is a rain forest with numerous trails running throughout it. Most of the hotels are located on the road between the town and the park, which runs along the side of a mountain. There are accommodations to suit just about any pocketbook, with most surrounded by jungle, where you are apt to be awakened by a howler monkey.

There are a number of daily commuter-type flights (20 minutes) between San Jose and Quepos, private van services, or you can always rent a car and drive yourself. You will hear many complaints about Costa Rican roads, but with the new highway from San Jose and the replacement of a couple of single-lane bridges the road between San Jose and Quepos is really pretty good and takes about two hours.
