FAD Fishing in Costa Rica
Fish Aggregating Devices, or FADs, are offshore structures that can concentrate bait and pelagic gamefish. Costa Rica has become well known among serious marlin anglers for specialized FAD trips.
These are not normal day charters. Many productive FAD locations are far offshore and may require overnight or multi-day trips on boats specifically equipped for that style of fishing.

Offshore Fishing Costa Rica FAQ
What is the difference between offshore and inshore fishing?
Offshore fishing targets pelagic species such as marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi in deeper Pacific water. Inshore fishing stays closer to the coast and targets species such as roosterfish and snapper.
How far offshore will we fish?
The distance changes with the season and the location of productive water. Captains follow current conditions, bait concentrations and recent fishing activity rather than fishing one fixed distance.
Is a full day necessary?
A full day is strongly recommended for offshore fishing because it allows more time to reach productive water and adjust locations if necessary.
What is the best season for sailfish?
Los Sueños and the Central Pacific are particularly well known for sailfish from approximately December through April.
Can we target both marlin and tuna?
Yes, but offshore fishing depends on what conditions and species are available that day. Tell the captain your priorities so the crew can plan accordingly.
Are marlin and sailfish released?
Yes. Marlin and sailfish are normally treated as catch-and-release sportfish.
Can we keep tuna and mahi-mahi?
Edible species such as yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi may generally be kept when appropriate, subject to regulations and captain guidance.
Do beginners need offshore fishing experience?
No. The captain and mate can explain the process and help first-time offshore anglers when fish are hooked.
