Planning Your Los Sueños Fishing Charter

1

Booking & Availability

How far in advance should I book a Los Sueños fishing charter?

If you already know your travel dates, it is best to check availability early. Popular boats and prime fishing dates can book in advance, especially during the busiest travel periods. Booking earlier also gives you more choices between different boat sizes and comfort levels.

How do I check which boats are available?

Send us your preferred fishing date, number of anglers and what you would most like to catch. We can then compare the available boats and help you decide which option best fits your group.

Are these private fishing charters?

Yes. The boats featured on our charter pages are private fishing charters for your group rather than shared fishing trips.

Do I need to know which boat I want before contacting you?

No. Many guests contact us without knowing which boat to choose. Tell us your group size, target species, date and preferred comfort level and we can help narrow down the fleet.

2

Choosing a Fishing Boat

What size fishing boat should I choose?

For many groups of four to six anglers, a 36–38 foot sportfisher provides an excellent balance of fishing space, comfort and price. Groups that want a larger salon, more cabin space or additional amenities may prefer a 42–52 foot yacht.

Is a larger fishing boat always better?

Not necessarily. A larger boat usually provides more interior space and amenities, but a smaller sportfisher can be an excellent choice for a smaller group. The best boat is the one that matches your group size, fishing goals, budget and preferred comfort level.

Do the boats have air conditioning?

Many of the Los Sueños sportfishing boats featured on our fleet have air-conditioned cabin or salon space. Amenities vary by boat, so check the individual charter listing or ask us when you inquire.

Which boats are best for families?

Families often prefer boats with an enclosed cabin, air conditioning and easy access to a restroom. Let us know the ages of the children in your group and we can recommend suitable options.

Fishing & Target Species

What fish can I catch from Los Sueños?

Offshore fishing can produce marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo. Inshore trips can target roosterfish, snapper, jack crevalle, grouper, amberjack and other coastal species.

When is the best season for sailfish?

Sailfish are commonly associated with the Central Pacific’s peak billfish season from roughly December through April. Fishing opportunities can still exist outside those months, but seasonal conditions and concentrations change.

When is the best time for marlin?

Marlin can be encountered at different times of year in Costa Rica’s Pacific waters. Availability varies by species and season, so if marlin is your main goal, tell us your travel dates and we can discuss the typical opportunities for that period.

Can we target yellowfin tuna?

Yes. Yellowfin tuna are an important offshore target from Los Sueños. They can be encountered throughout much of the year, although fishing conditions vary.

Can we target roosterfish?

Yes. Roosterfish are one of Costa Rica’s signature inshore gamefish. An inshore charter can focus on roosterfish along with snapper, jacks and other coastal species.

Should I book offshore or inshore fishing?

Choose offshore fishing if your priority is marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi or wahoo. Choose inshore fishing if roosterfish, snapper and other coastal species are your main target. If you have several fishing days, combining both can give you a broader Costa Rica fishing experience.

Can the captain guarantee a specific fish?

No ethical fishing operation can guarantee a particular species or number of fish. The crew will use local knowledge, current conditions and experience to give your group the best opportunity possible.

4

Your Fishing Day

Where do Los Sueños fishing charters depart?

The featured Los Sueños boats depart from Los Sueños Marina in Playa Herradura on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.

What is included on a full-day fishing charter?

Full-day charters generally include the captain and mate, fishing tackle, bait, water, soft drinks, beer, snacks or fruit and lunch. Exact inclusions can vary slightly by boat, so we confirm the details before your trip.

What should I bring fishing?

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable lightweight clothing and any personal medication you may need. A light rain jacket can also be useful depending on the season. Avoid bringing more gear than necessary because fishing equipment is already provided aboard the charter.

Can we bring our own food or drinks?

In most cases, yes. If your group has specific drinks, snacks, dietary restrictions or preferences, tell us in advance so we can confirm arrangements with the boat.

Can we keep fish we catch?

Edible species such as tuna and mahi-mahi may generally be kept when appropriate. Billfish such as sailfish and marlin are normally released. The captain will follow local regulations and responsible fishing practices.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather and sea conditions are evaluated with safety as the priority. If conditions create a legitimate safety issue, the captain and charter operator will determine the appropriate course of action. Policies vary depending on the circumstances, so specific weather questions should be discussed when booking.

5

Fishing Licenses, Tips & Other Questions

Do I need a Costa Rica fishing license?

Anglers need the appropriate Costa Rica sportfishing license. We can provide instructions before your fishing date so you have everything organized before boarding the boat.

Is gratuity included in the charter rate?

Crew gratuity is generally separate from the charter price. A tip is customary when you are happy with the captain and mate’s service and effort.

What is a normal tip for the fishing crew?

Many fishing guests tip approximately 15–20% for good service, although gratuity remains at your discretion.

Can beginners book a Los Sueños fishing charter?

Absolutely. You do not need previous offshore fishing experience. The captain and mate can help explain the techniques, tackle and what to do when a fish is hooked.

Can children go fishing?

Yes. Family fishing trips can be a great experience. When children are involved, tell us their ages so we can help recommend an appropriate boat and fishing style.

Can you help with lodging and transportation too?

Yes. If you want more than a single fishing day, visit our fishing vacation packages page for options combining fishing, accommodations and transportation.

Still Have a Question?

Tell us your dates, group size and what you’re trying to catch. We can help with the details and recommend the right charter.
