Sailfish are known for explosive strikes, incredible acceleration and spectacular jumps once hooked. They are one of the most exciting billfish for both first-time offshore anglers and experienced sport fishermen.

Best Time to Go

Los Sueños Sailfish Season

Sailfish may be encountered throughout the year, but the Central Pacific’s strongest and most consistent sailfish period is generally January through April.

Early Season November–December

Sailfish numbers often begin improving as Costa Rica transitions toward the peak Central Pacific season.

Peak Season January–April

The prime Los Sueños sailfish period and the months most strongly associated with high-volume Central Pacific billfish action.

Transition May–June

Sailfish remain possible while the offshore mix begins shifting toward other pelagic species.

Green Season July–October

Sailfish can still be caught, while marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi may become larger parts of the offshore opportunity.

How Sailfish Are Caught

Trolling Teasers and Rigged Baits

Most sailfish fishing from Los Sueños is done offshore by trolling. The crew spreads teasers and rigged baits behind the boat while searching productive blue water.

Once a sailfish appears behind a teaser or takes a bait, the crew works quickly to get the fish connected while using tackle designed specifically for billfish.

Teasers

Used to attract aggressive sailfish into the spread and bring fish close enough for the crew to present a bait.

Rigged Natural Baits

Carefully prepared baits are commonly trolled behind the boat to create a natural presentation.

Circle Hooks

Circle-hook techniques help support responsible billfish catch-and-release practices.

Responsible Sportfishing

Sailfish Are Catch and Release

Sailfish are a sportfishing species and should be released. Experienced crews use techniques designed to help minimize stress and return the fish to the water efficiently.

Circle hooks, proper tackle and experienced handling all play important roles in responsible billfish fishing.

Photographs can usually be taken during the release process, but preserving the health of the fish should always come first.

Choose a Full Day for Sailfish

If sailfish is your main target, a full-day offshore trip gives the captain the greatest flexibility to locate productive water and stay with the bite.

Offshore conditions and fish locations change from day to day, so additional range and fishing time can matter.
